Which of these sentences are incorrect?
1. I have lived in Japan since eight years.
2. She has been learning English for 18 months.
3. Where have you been? I've been waiting for you since 30
minutes.
4. He has been working at Mazda for 1999.
5. We traveled all over Europe for six months.
Looking at the examples above, can you figure out when we should use "
since", and when we should use "for"?
Since
After "since", we use
a specific point in time in the past.
For example:
2002 - They have been filming that movie
since 2002.
9:00 pm - I have studying
since 9:00 pm.
yesterday - I haven't had anything to eat
since yesterday.
last month - Her dad has been in the hospital
since last month.
For
After "for", we use
a period of time.
For example:
10 minutes - I've been waiting for the bus
for 10 minutes.
2 hours - The baby has been crying for
2 hours!
one whole day - Those teenagers have been
singing at a karaoke for
one whole day.
8 years - I've lived in Hiroshima for
8 years.
