Modal Verbs

Are you confused about modal verbs (can, could, shall, should, will, would, may, might)?  Many students are!

A very effective way to learn how to use these modal verbs is to remember the situations in which they are being used.

Look at these examples, and match each sentence with the correct situation:

Sentence with a Modal Verb:

Situation

1. Can I have some coffee please?

2. Can you swim? I can't.

3.  Could you drive me to the station?

4.  It could still snow a little in May in Toronto.

5.  Shall I call a taxi for you?

6.  Shall we go out for dinner tonight?

7.  You shouldn't stay up late every night.  It's not good for your health.

8.  Should I go and talk to the professor?

9.  Will you clean the house for me?

10. I think I'll get this dress.  It's pretty!

11. Would you like a cup of tea?

12. Would you like to go to the movies this Saturday?

13. May I talk to you for a moment?

14. According to the weather forecast, it may snow tomorrow.

15. I might be home this weekend.

16. Look at the clouds - it might rain this evening.

 

Situation

a. offering something to someone

h. saying that something is possible (quite formal)

b. making a suggestion

i. asking for something (informal)

c. asking someone for help (informal)

j. asking for advice

d. giving someone your opinion or advice

k. saying that something is possible - but unlikely

e. saying that it is possible for something to happen

l. saying you are able or not able to do something

f. asking for permission (formal)

m. deciding to do something

g. inviting someone to do something

n. asking for help (more formal)
