Vocabulary

Late or Lately?

Which of the following sentences are correct?

1. My car broke down, so I arrived at her house lately.

2. I've been feeling unwell lately.

3. I stayed up lately last night to finish my homework.

4. She failed the course because she handed in her assignment lately.

5. There has been a lot of murders in our city lately.

6. I'm sorry I am late.

Many students are confused with these two words.

Late can used as an adjective and as an adverb.

In #1 above, the correct answer should be:

  • My car broke down, so I arrived at her house late. (late in this case is an adverb)

It is the same as in #3 and #4:

  • I stayed up late last night to finish my homework.

  • She failed the course because she handed in her assignment late.

In No. 6, late is used as an adjective.

Lately has a totally different meaning - it means recently.  #2 and #5 above show how it is being used.

Now try these questions:

1.  Don't be late/lately.

2. Spring comes late/lately this year.

3. The bus was late/lately so we arrived home late/lately.

4. I haven't seen her late/lately.

5. I have been very busy late/lately./p>

6. Late/Lately last night she went out for a drive.
