Unit 5.1 - "Out" meaning "Outside" / "Leaving"

  • Guess the meanings of the phrasal verbs from context:

     

    • This is a high security prison so it is very difficult for prisoners to break out.

    • Don't stay inside on a nice sunny day!  Let's go out!

    • If you don't pay your rent by the end of this week, you have to move out.

    • Can you pop out to get some sugar?

    • We set out in January to travel around the world.

    • She had a big fight with her boss and she stormed out of the office and never returned.

    • Can we settle our bill when we check out?

Break out

(inseparable)

To escape from prison 
>>Three dangerous prisoners broke out of jail yesterday
.

Go out

(inseparable)

To go somewhere else 
>>I want to go out this Saturday night.
>>Do you fancy going out for dinner this evening?

Move out

(inseparable)

To stop living in a particular house 
>>She wants to move out of her parents' house and live by herself.

Pop out

(inseparable)

To leave the place where you are and go somewhere for a short time (Informal)
>>I'm just popping out to get some milk.
Set out  (inseparable) To start a journey 
>>It was quite sunny when we set out.
>>They said they'd set out at about 7 o'clock, so they should be here soon.

Storm out

(inseparable)

To enter or leave a place angrily
>>He stormed out of the house, slamming the door behind him.
Check out (inseparable) To leave a hotel after paying and giving back the key of your room 
>>We have to check out of the hotel before 11 a.m. 

 

  • Exercise:

     

    • Complete the following conversation:

       

      • Bill:   Did you hear the news?  A serial killer of the prison yesterday.

      • Wife: Oh no!  I wonder where he's hiding now.

      • Bill:   Maybe in our neighborhood.

      • Wife: Don't say that!  Now I'm too scared to !

      • Bill:   Calm down!  I was just joking!  Hey, I'm to get some cigarettes.  Be back in a sec.

      • Wife:  Cigarettes?  I thought you said you were going to quit smoking!  If you keep on smoking, you have to of this house and don't come back!

        (She then angrily of the room.)

      • Bill (to himself):  Hmm... not a bad idea!  I can on a journey around the world!!!
