Unit 2.4 - "In" meaning "Collapsing" or "Surrendering"

  • Guess the meanings of the phrasal verbs from context:

     

    1. At first her father didn't allow her to go to Iraq, but after hours of discussions, he finally caved in.

    2. I'm exhausted - the hike and the hot weather really did me in.

    3. Don't give in to every demand that your child makes, otherwise you'll spoil him.

    4. I am bored - I want to chuck everything in and move to live in another country.

     

    All these phrasal verbs have the meaning of "collapsing" or "surrendering".  See Explanations ê

     

  • Explanations:

 

Cave in

(inseparable)

To agree to something that you were against before, after someone has persuaded you or threatened you 
>>The government are firm and they will not cave in to the terrorists' threats.

Do in

(separable)

To make someone extremely tired (informal)
>>That walk's completely done me in.

Give in

(inseparable)

To finally agree to what someone demands
>>He nagged me so much to buy him a new bike that eventually I just gave in.
>>The government cannot be seen to give in to terrorists' demands. 

To accept that you have been defeated and agree to stop competing or fighting 
>>She knew she'd lost the argument but she wouldn't give in.
>>You'll never guess the answer. Do you give in?

Chuck in

(separable)

To stop doing an activity (usually a job or a course) and to leave the place where you were doing it 
>>He chucked in his job to travel round the world.

 

  • Exercise:

     

    • Complete the following conversation:

      • Bill:  Oh, I am !

      • Jun:  What happened?

      • Bill:  I've just spent 8 hours negotiating with the workers.  They kept asking for more benefits and longer holidays.  They wouldn't .

      • Jun:  So did you agree to their demands?

      • Bill:  Well, at one point, I was so tired that I almost , but I didn't.

      • Jun:  So, what's going to happen next?

      • Bill:  I guess we have to continue the negotiation tomorrow.  You know, sometimes I feel like my job and moving to a tropical island!

      • Jun:  Yeah, I know what you mean.
